ANTHONY
âYou boys should go fishing,â Arthur said during dinner. âThe weatherâs perfect.â
âDidnât you hear, Dad? Fishingâs boring. It was all over the news.â Ethan scooped more rice onto his plate.
âFishing is the art of patience, my impatient son. Chris used to love fishing back in the day.â
âChris tolerated fishing because it got him to spend time with you, the same way he was into knitting because of Mom.â
Ruth raised a warning finger. âDonât drag my knitting into this. He made me the most beautiful sweater, although the right arm was shorter than the left. I still have it somewhere.â
Anthony drank from his water to hide a smile. He always loved how at ease he felt with Ethanâs parents, although he was feeling rather agitated sitting at their table this Friday evening. The last time he had been in a similar âcoming outâ situation, it had been with his religious family, and hadnât that turned out wonderfully? He didnât expect Ethanâs parents to react similarlyâthey still had a framed Hillary Clinton photo on the wallâbut he was wary just the same, more for Ethanâs sake than his.
âSo...â Ethan cleared his throat and rubbed his palms on his legs.
Anthony gave him a reassuring smile.
âOn no!â Ruth covered her mouth. âYou lost your job?â
âWhat? No! I just started this week.â
Ruth exhaled. Her brownish hair was graying, but her eyes were as green and vibrant as Ethanâs.
âLeave him alone,â Arthur said, an older version of Ethan. âIf he loses his job, itâs fine. Heâll bounce back.â
âJesus, I didnât lose my job. Iâm just dating Anthony.â
Silence spread across the cozy dining room. Anthony held his breath, counting until eleven before Ruth finally cleared her throat and said, âWell, good. Anthonyâs a fine catch.â She smiled at him with such fondness, he couldnât even say thank you.
âHold on.â Arthur put down his fork. âIn my days, dating meant... dating.â
âIt hasnât changed much,â Ethan said.
âDoes this mean youâre a homosexual?â
âIâm bisexual.â
Arthur pursed his bottom lip at Ruth. âHow âbout that?â
âHush you. Donât play games with him. You were sure he was gay when he was in high school.â
Ethan leaned forward. âSorry, what?â
Arthur waved his hand dismissively. âYou werenât into sports, and you always kept your curfewâwhat was I supposed to think?â
âMany other things?â
âDonât make a big deal out of it. I was fine with your possible homosexuality, and Iâm fine with you dating Anthony. Hell, your mom and I were sure youâd end up marrying Chris!â
Ruth laughed. âWe really were. Anyway, Iâm happy for you two. Anthony, welcome to the family. If you ever need to bitch about my son, give me a call.â
âI... thank you.â
Arthur cleared his throat. âAnthony, I expect you to treat my son with respect and honesty.â
âDad...â
âIâm speaking, Ethan.â
Anthony sat straighter. âYes, sir.â
âWe raised Ethan to be a good man, and whoever he ends up with should consider themselves lucky.â
âI do feel lucky.â He glanced at Ethan, who seemed about ready to hide under the table.
âGood. Is your business doing well?â
âYes, sir. Never better.
